Puerto Vallarta is one of the more practical destinations for families traveling with young kids — and a few things make it stand out from other Mexican resort towns.

Compact All-Inclusive Resorts
For toddlers, a compact all-inclusive resort is usually the easiest option. Grand Park Royal in Mismaloya is a good example. The resort has a central pool close to the rooms and beach access nearby — everything is within a short walk, which keeps the daily routine simple.

Walkability outside the resort is moderate, but taxis are inexpensive and easy to find. If your main goal is a low-stress beach vacation, this option works extremely well.
Staying in Old Town
Old Town Puerto Vallarta (Zona Romántica) offers a completely different experience. Playa Los Arcos is a good example of a smaller hotel in this area. Everything is extremely walkable — restaurants, beaches, and the Malecón are all within a short distance.
Typical day: Morning walk → Breakfast → Pool → Nap → Evening stroll through town

This option works well with toddlers, but it’s honestly even better without kids, when you can fully enjoy the restaurant and nightlife scene. Still, if you value walkability and culture, Old Town is a great choice.
Boca de Tomatlán
Boca de Tomatlán is about an hour south of the airport and feels very different from the main city. The water is calmer and cleaner, the landscape is much less developed, and the beaches here are excellent for kids.
The trade-off: Walkability is limited and many activities require a water taxi — we used Stephanie’s (Estefany) Boat Panga Tours to reach beaches further south. But if you want something more authentic and scenic, Boca can be worth the extra effort.
